The Bellingen Street group meets every Wednesday at 8:30am, on the corner of Bellingen St and Crescent Close (near the old Urunga Tourist information centre). Look out for Jenny, the local coordinator. Thanks to Bellingen Shire Council’s Environmental Levy, and Urunga Lions Club, the groups is off to a great start with help from Brent (New Earth Regeneration).
The vegetation at the Crescent Court site is dominated by a single Keith Class vegetation type – Estuarine Sea Rush Swamp Oak Forest, which is a Threatened Ecological Community. The presence of Eucalyptus robusta (Swamp Mahogany) and Melaleuca quinquenervia (Broad-leaved Paperbark) suggests that Flying foxes and other nectivores are likely to forage at the site, particularly in winter.
The dominant canopy species in this vegetation type are Casuarina glauca (Swamp Oak), Melaleuca quinquenervia (Broad-leaved Paperbark) and Eucalyptus robusta (Swamp Mahogany). The mid storey species include Glochidion ferdinandi (Cheese Tree), Archontophoenix cunninghamiana (Bangalow Palm) and Guioa semiglauca. The native ground cover species are sparse, with Hemarthria uncinata (Mat Grass) and regenerating natives present. Over forty species have been identified on site so far!
